April 13, 2025Issue 42

On April 3, 2025, the 4th SAFETY4SEA Manila Forum brought together maritime professionals at the Sheraton Manila Hotel to tackle key industry challenges. Capt. Pol Winston G. Haboc, Head of PHILCAMSAT, took the stage during Panel #4: Future-Ready Seafarers: Soft Skills and Training Priorities, where he delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled "Future Ready Seafarers: Beyond the Technical Skills." Drawing from three decades of maritime training advancements, he highlighted the shift from purely technical instruction to a more holistic, competence-based approach that integrates soft skills, technology, and sustainability into seafarer development.
Capt. Pol emphasized that future-ready seafarers must adapt to the industry's rapid digital transformation, environmental regulations, and evolving training methodologies. He discussed the growing role of advanced simulation tools (VR, AR, AI), mental health and well-being initiatives, and upskilling programs to equip maritime professionals for a greener and more tech-driven industry. He also underlined the importance of leadership, communication, and teamwork, which are just as critical as technical expertise in ensuring operational safety and efficiency. With decarbonization, cybersecurity, and diversity & inclusion shaping the industry's future, Capt. Pol encouraged collaboration among training institutions, shipowners, and regulators to prepare seafarers not just for the present, but for the challenges of 2050 and beyond.
